Getting Full Power from the 7100 and Expanded Coverage
Full Power Mod
The Firmware Upgrade makes the radio meter show more
power, but only slightly affects the output. Doing the
Jumper Mod will give you a easy 100 watts PEP. Doing
the Capacitor Mod also, will give you approx 130 watts
PEP, but is "NOT" for anyone to do that is not
experience in working with SMD, since everything is so
small and close together.
As you can see above, the chip capacitors, 1508, 1509, and 1510 are all paralel
, so exactly where the jumper is placed at the ends of them does not matter.
The small point marked with the red 1 in the above photos is perfect.
The Mars Mod
This will take care of any of your HF or UHF Mars
needs, and any new bands added in the future.
Using one, or both of these sure helps. Cheap at Harbor Freight.
If you do not have the proper size soldering iron, or do not feel comfortable
removing the diodes with one, you can use a Small pair of diagonal cutters,
and remove the diodes by placing the cutters in the recess corners of the diodes
on the spots shown, and give a squeeze. They cut very easy with a good small set
of cutters.
Both of these modifications are done by first removing the bottom of the radio.
Make sure the power cord is removed before doing any of this, and you turn it
upside down and blow out particals from the diodes. When you have completed the work, use your
magnifying glass to inspect the area where the diodes were, to make sure
no pieces remain. No reset is required. When you power it up, the little box around the TX on the front
should now be solid, instead of dash marks, which means it has expanded transmit now.
